Where's Calvin Coolidge when you need him?

Why do American's love activist presidents? We are finishing up 8 years with Bush whose activism has given him 20% approval rating. Now our likely candidates are Obama and McCain -- both of whom, albeit from different idealogical vantage points, envision a great and active America with them at the helm.

What happened to the negative version of the golden rule -- to not do unto others as they would not do unto you. In politics and governing a lot of bad happens under the guise of trying to do a lot of good. Most of the time it is better to just not do anything bad and keep things running efficiently. Then the rest of us can go about living life the way we see fit.

As Calvin Coolidge once said, "Four-fifths of all our troubles would disappear, if we would only sit down and keep still."

Calvin -- where are you??

Given this post, I'd be interested in your views on Bob Barr's possible run...

(Assume that he could get enough votes to win--I understand that's not likely, but he may end up being my "statement" vote...)

Not sure yet. I don't see myself as a libertarian.

I am definitely not excited about the choice between Obama and McCain.

BTW -- the Libertarians haven't had their convention yet, so Barr isn't the official libertarian candidate is he?

Not yet, but apparently he's the front-runner of 4 possible LP candidates thus far. (The LP Convention is 5/22-26.) I'm becoming more Libertarian in philosophy, I think, but it will take a good long while for my registration to change...

Btw, www.lp.org is their site, if you want more info...

Mike Gravel has jumped to the Libertarian party, also. I assume he will be Barr's chief rival for the nomination. The problem with third parties is they never can seem to get a "heavyweight." Barr never held any office higher than Congressman, and he lost his seat in a primary after reapportionment put him and another incumbent Republican in the same district.
