Had a phone chat with my new friend Aaron last night. He is a Lexingtonian living in Southern Californ9ia who heard about St. Pat's from (I think - correct me if I'm wrong) the ubiquitous Alan Creech (he's everywhere, he's eerywhere). We talked about all kinds of stuff. One thing we both agreed would be cool is to start a home church where the members live in proximity to one another and embrace a rule of life rooted in Anglican BCP spirituality. Folks could gather daily to say the office - maybe midweek for Holy Communion, etc.
We also talked about my crazy notion of a dual reality church of both parish (the large, catholic, big boat thing) and home churches (the sectarian, raise the bar, be a disiciple thing). I think Stanley Hauerwas wrote the church of the future should be catholic and anabaptist (how's that for a lovely post-modern paradox!!). There is a history of dual structures in the history of Christianity. Of course anglican's have good ole John Wesley and the "United Societies" (that was the official name of 18th century Methodists). That of course was a nationally organized movement. But there was also this thing called the Religious Society that drove the 18th Century Anglican Evangelical renewal apart from Methodism. Local parishes would have a society for the sectarian expression of the faith and the parish for the catholic expression. Anyway, I have this notion that both can exist in a local community - at least I want ot try it.
My wife is a blog addict. Now she has a second blog for political stuff - it's called the "Raging Moderate" (how's that for commitment!!). Check it out for regular stuff about state government, health policy and rants sure to ignite the fury of those on both the left and the right. (Must say that our favorite contact sport is politics!!)
Cheers.
