Whew - Holy Week is over. It was a great week but I am beat. As an Anglican, Holy Week is a rush non-stop activity. As a music director in an Anglican church it is even more busy than normal!! But it is worth it. In fact, I think the weariness is one way of entering into the redemptive events of that week. Maybe it is a miniscule taste of the weight of that week.

The best day for me was Good Friday morning. Our parish had a 7:30AM Good Friday Liturgy with Reserved Holy Communion. Only two folks showed up - me and the rector (pastor) of my church. We met in our chapel - a quiet, simple, contemplative room with just the right amount of art help create sacred space. I read three long passages of scripture out loud. We prayed the set prayers for the day and we shared in Holy Communion. I was already tired, I did not have the energy to "get into it", at first I just wanted to go to breakfast. But as the service wrapped up I experienced a change. I was refreshed by simply praying the prayers and letting this ancient liturgy - which was being celebrated all over the world (and in heaven) that day carry me along. We simply did liturgy - the work of the people. We did not have an awesome "worship experience", we did not get buzzed on the presence of Jesus. We just read scripture, said prayers and ate bread and drank wine.

Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. Alleluia. Alleluia.
